The good news is that sore throats are usually not serious, and they’re easy to treat.

A sore throat is a common problem, especially when you have a cold. It can be uncomfortable and painful, and it’s easy to spread it around.

Home Remedies for Sore Throat

If you’re experiencing a sore throat, there are a few things you should know:

Do not use your voice too much. The vocal cords (the muscles in your larynx) are very delicate and can be damaged if you talk for too long or at too high of an intensity.

  • If you need to speak, make sure to take some breaks and/or rest so that you don’t strain your vocal cords.
  • If you feel any pain or pressure in your throat when swallowing or talking, see a doctor as soon as possible! This could indicate something serious like strep throat or other pathologies like cancer.

Sometimes, the best thing to do when you have a sore throat is to take care of it.

Sore throats are often caused by viruses. The virus can enter your body through air droplets or by touching contaminated surfaces with the virus.

Most viral sore throats can be helped to ease the symptoms with home remedies.

Hydration

First, drink lots of water, and not just in the morning, but all day long. Warm water will help to relieve irritable feelings in the throat. You might be tempted to skip the water and get on with your day, but that’s not going to help the sore throat. It’ll only make it worse.

Eat Healthily

Eat foods that are rich in zinc and vitamin C (like oranges). These will help your immune system fight off any cold viruses that may be making you feel a little under the weather!

Get Rest

Your body needs time to recover from being sick and stay healthy, as well as prevent future illnesses from happening.

If you’re feeling under the weather, try taking a warm bath or shower before bedtime so that you can sleep better at night and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.

Using Saltwater to Gargle

Gargling with warm salt water is a great way to relieve your sore throat. The salt will help to reduce the swelling and soothe the pain.

First, make sure you are comfortable and have no fever. Then, fill a small bowl with warm water and add 4 tablespoons of table salt. Swish this mixture around in your mouth for about 10 seconds, then spit it out.  You can do these steps several times per day until feeling better.

Have a Hot Tea!

Tea is a great way to get rid of a sore throat. It’s made from green tea leaves, which contain catechin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which are both antioxidants that help reduce inflammation.

Try chamomile tea. The soothing properties of this herbal tea will help relieve your soreness, and it can also help you fall asleep faster.

Hot Spices

Some soups that are good for sore throats include chicken noodle soup, chicken and rice soup, vegetable soup, and beef vegetable soup. They all have a similar taste and are easy to make with ingredients that most people have on hand in the kitchen.

Medications to Treat Sore Throats

Pain Killers

The most common type of painkiller is acetaminophen, which is found in brand-name medications like Tylenol.

Acetaminophen is effective at relieving pain, but it does not reduce inflammation. As a result, it is not as effective at treating the underlying cause of a sore throat.

Other painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen, too, can help soothe a sore throat.

These over-the-counter painkillers can help temporarily alleviate the pain and soreness associated with a sore throat.

However, aspirin and ibuprofen have anti-inflammatory properties that will help to reduce the severity of the sore throat.

Throat-Numbing Medications

This is another common option for relieving the pain and discomfort associated with a sore throat. These medications work by reducing the sensation of pain in the throat.

There are a few different types of throat-numbing medications that are available over the counter (OTC). Some of the most common throat-numbing medications are listed below.

Throat lozenges (Halls or Cepaco)

Throat sprays (Chloraseptic, Vicks VapoCOOL)

The prolonged use of these medications can cause throat injury unnoticed or aspiration of contents into the lungs.

The anasthetic agents contained in these medications are benzocaine, menthol, and phenol.

Antihistamines

These are another type of over-the-counter medication that can help relieve sore throat pain. These medicines work by reducing the amount of histamine in the body.

Histamine is a substance that is released by the body in response to an allergy or irritation. Antihistamines can be taken as pills, liquids, or nasal sprays.

Be sure to follow the directions on the medication label carefully, as overuse or misuse can cause serious side effects.

What Can Make Your Sore Throat Worse?
